Famous Neon Signs in Film & TV

Chances are, you’ve encountered a neon sign in a film or TV show. The wonderful world of neon pops up more than you think. We thought we’d share a few of our favourite famous neon sign sightings in cinema and on the silver screen….

The Mask: Coco Bongo Nightclub

coco bango
The Coco Bongo was the “sssssmokin’” fictional nightclub in one of Jim Carrey’s earliest movies The Mask. It was the place where The Mask and Cameron Diaz performed an amazing dance routine to a swing band. We love the swirly letters on the sign outside – it looks like a crazy night out!

Breaking Bad: The Dog House

dog house
The Dog House in Breaking Bad is actually called the Dog House in real life. Fronted by a bright neon sausage dog, this drive-in fast-food joint is visited by drug dealer Jesse on several occasions. He must have been hypnotised by the awesome neon lights. Fans can go and see the real Dog House in Albuquerque, New Mexico – but hopefully there won’t be any wheeling and dealing going on.

Moulin Rouge: Everywhere

moulin rouge
Based on the real Parisian club (pictured above), Baz Luhrmann movie Moulin Rouge is packed full of insane neon lighting. Dramatic, hyperactive, romantic, tragic – whatever emotion the characters experience, there’s a neon light for the occasion. In fact, Baz Luhrmann is a huge fan of neon lighting. From the electric chapel in Romeo and Juliet to an entire street devoted to neon signs in The Great Gatsby, Baz really loves his zany lighting.

Various: Las Vegas Sign

Featured in countless films and TV shows, the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign is one of the most iconic in the world. Movies include The Hangover, Ocean’s 11, Rain Man, Showgirls, Austin Powers and many more are set in, or feature, the neon lights of Las Vegas.
